やや古い話で恐縮ですが、この夏、愛子さまがイートン校に短期留学されたという話がありました。
イートン校は全寮制の男子校なのになんで？
と疑問に思ったので、イートン校のHP内を探してみたところ、下記の記述を発見しました。少し長いのですが全文を掲載してみます。
English Language and Cultural Course for Japanese Students
This course is held every year at Eton College, and allows up to 320 boys and girls from Japanese high schools the opportunity to study English at the College and experience eighteen days of English culture.
The course has been designed to give students about 50 hours of TEFL tuition in English. A specially designed programme of linguistic and cultural material is used to help students improve their English. Lessons and Drama sessions aim to develop good communication skills and by the end of the course students will be able to take part in a conversation.
Students are tested at the beginning and the end of the teaching programme and certificates are issued on the successful completion of the course, together with a report on each individual. A wide variety of out-of-class activities complements the teaching in the classroom.
A key aim of the course is to give an insight into British cultural heritage. Students visit various places (e.g. London Museums, Syon House, Windsor Castle, Oxford University, Portsmouth, Stonehenge and Hampton Court Palace).The excursions are used as a basis for the teaching programme. Diary sessions are an integral part of the course and allow students to develop their writing skills in the context of their cultural experience.
The course Chairman is a senior Eton master with other Eton staff acting working in key roles. Many of the assisting staff are Old Etonians.

夏の間、イートン校に通う生徒たちは家に帰りますので、学校はがら空きになるわけですね。で、その空いたスペースに、世界各国から留学生を受け入れているということのようです。日本人向けのほか、中国人向けのコースもあるようです。
料金など詳しい情報はHPには掲載されておらず、
「詳しい情報が欲しかったら電子メール下さい」
とのことでした。
どういう形で参加者を決めているのかは分かりませんでした。受け入れ数が３２０人と少ないので、誰でも参加できるというわけではなさそうです。
読売新聞のサイト（２０１４年のもの）によると、愛子さまの通われている学習院女子中等科・高等科からは、毎年４０人が参加しているとのこと。ネットで検索すると、他にも巣鴨、穎明館、青雲（長崎）などが参加しているようです。ほかにもいくつかありそうです。
イートン校がこんなプログラムを持ってるなんて知りませんでした。子どもたちが高校生になって「行きたい」と言い出したら、ぜひとも行かせてあげたいな。
